Most Lennox heat pump repairs in Dallas run between $150 and $650, depending on which component failed. We keep common Lennox parts on our trucks and can usually diagnose and quote the job the same day we arrive. The price you get is written down before any work starts, so there’s no guessing game when you’re already dealing with a system that’s down.

Here’s how it usually goes: your thermostat is set to 72, but the air coming out of the vents feels lukewarm, or the outdoor unit is making a sound it didn’t make last summer, or the system is running constantly and the electric bill just climbed $80. Heat pumps work year-round in Dallas, unlike a furnace that sits idle half the year. That constant use, paired with our humidity, is why a heat pump part fails faster here than in drier climates. The most common culprits are the reversing valve, the compressor contactor, the defrost control board, or the outdoor fan motor.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
We service the full Lennox heat pump line, from the builder-grade Merit series up through the Elite and the variable-capacity Signature units. That includes the XP13, XP14, XP16, XP20, XP21, XP25, and the newer SL25XPV. We also work on older Lennox units that are still running after 12 or 15 years, which is fairly common in Dallas because many homeowners run their heat pumps hard but maintain them just enough to keep going.
Before we order or install anything, we pull the actual model and serial number off the unit’s rating plate. The plate sits on the outside of the condenser cabinet and lists the exact refrigerant type, electrical specs, and sometimes the compressor part number. Lennox has changed compressor designs, defrost logic, and even thermostat wiring protocols between series, so a part that fits an XP14 will not necessarily fit an XP16. This is the single biggest compatibility gotcha we see. When the original Lennox part makes sense, we quote OEM. When a quality aftermarket equivalent from a supplier like Copeland for compressors or Genteq for fan motors is available and carries the same or better warranty, we tell you that and give you both numbers. You decide, with the prices in front of you.
Quick note: Dalton Heating & Air Dallas is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Lennox, but we’re factory-trained on Lennox equipment and stock or order genuine Lennox parts regularly.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- System runs but doesn’t heat or cool properly. The compressor may be running, but if the reversing valve isn’t shifting between modes, you’ll get cool air in winter or warm air in summer. This valve is the part that lets a heat pump switch from heating to cooling, and it’s a high-failure item on older Lennox units.
- Outdoor unit won’t turn on at all. This is often the contactor, the electrical relay that feeds power to the compressor and fan. Dallas heat and the constant cycling of a heat pump wears contactors out faster than in cooler climates.
- Unit ices over in cooling mode during mild weather. A heat pump will naturally frost in certain conditions, but a full block of ice on the coil during a Dallas afternoon usually means a defrost control board failure or a low refrigerant charge. The defrost board tells the unit when to temporarily reverse and melt the ice. When it fails, the coil freezes and airflow drops.
- Loud buzzing, humming, or clicking from the outdoor cabinet. A hard-start compressor pulling locked-rotor amps sounds like a loud buzz followed by a thermal overload trip. It might just need a start capacitor and relay, but if ignored, the compressor itself goes next.
- Electric bill spikes with no change in usage. A heat pump with a failing component often runs longer to hit the same setpoint. The compressor works against a restriction or a failing fan motor, and the meter keeps spinning. We see this all over Dallas, from Oak Cliff up through Richardson.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the reality of Dallas pricing. A capacitor or contactor swap typically lands between $150 and $300, installed. A defrost control board or fan motor runs $250 to $550. A compressor replacement, which includes recovering the refrigerant, swapping the compressor, pressure testing, vacuum, and a fresh charge, runs toward the top of that $650 range and sometimes a bit beyond depending on the unit’s age and refrigerant type. R-410A units are simpler to service. Older R-22 Lennox units cost more because the refrigerant itself is expensive and getting harder to source.
| Lennox Heat Pump Repair | Typical Installed Price in Dallas |
|---|---|
| Capacitor or contactor | $150 – $300 |
| Defrost control board | $250 – $450 |
| Outdoor fan motor | $250 – $500 |
| Reversing valve | $450 – $650 |
| Compressor (R-410A) | $550 – $650+ |
| Full system tune-up | $80 – $200 |
Every price we quote is written down before we start. No overtime charges, no “it turned out worse than we thought” markup at the door. The whole repair is guaranteed in writing for a full year. If that same part fails inside twelve months, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it’s been how we’ve operated since 2003.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things before calling: make sure the breaker at the panel hasn’t tripped, check that the thermostat is set correctly and has fresh batteries, and verify the filter isn’t packed with dust. A clogged filter will mimic a lot of heat pump failures and it’s a two-minute fix.
What you should not do is open the condenser cabinet. Inside that unit you’re dealing with 240 volts and a capacitor that holds a charge even with the power off. A capacitor can hit you hard enough to stop your heart. And anything involving refrigerant requires an EPA certification by law, plus a set of manifold gauges and a recovery machine. That’s not a weekend project. If the breaker keeps tripping, the unit won’t start, or you hear a sound that’s new and bad, call (254) 280-5320. One of our techs will show up inside the window, diagnose it, and hand you a written price before any work begins. Marco Benitez has been turning wrenches on Texas heat pumps for two decades, and he’s the one who sets the standard on every call: tell me what’s wrong, I’ll tell you what it costs – in writing, before we start.
FAQs
A properly maintained Lennox heat pump in Dallas typically lasts 12 to 15 years, though the compressor alone often makes it to 12 if the unit isn’t short-cycling on a bad contactor or starving for airflow. The real lifespan killer here isn’t the heat, it’s the runtime. Dallas heat pumps run 2,500 to 3,000 hours a year in heating and cooling combined, which is nearly double what the same unit sees in a moderate climate. If your unit is over 12 and the repair costs more than half the price of a new system, we’ll say so plainly and show you both numbers. Call (254) 280-5320 and we’ll give you a straight read.
Sometimes, but less often than you’d hope. A capacitor, contactor, defrost board, or fan motor is a replacement item, not a repairable one. Compressors used to be rebuilt, but modern scroll compressors are not serviceable in the field. The parts we can meaningfully repair are things like wiring connections, condensate drains, and air leaks, and those are usually included in the labor on a normal service call. Anything with a sealed bearing or a circuit board gets swapped, not patched.
Most repairs are a single-visit job of one to three hours, assuming the part is on our truck. Capacitors, contactors, defrost boards, and fan motors are stocked. A compressor replacement takes most of a day because of the recovery, vacuum, and recharge steps involved. When a part has to be ordered, it’s usually in our hands within two to four business days in Dallas, and we’ll schedule the return visit before we leave the first time.
We keep common Lennox-compatible capacitors, contactors, fan motors, thermistors, and defrost boards on our trucks, plus crossover parts for the other major brands we service like Carrier and Trane. Compressors and reversing valves are typically ordered per job because the exact model varies too much to carry every option. If we have to order, we’ll show you the order confirmation and the part number before you pay anything.
Dealing with a Lennox heat pump that’s down in a Dallas summer is not a wait-and-see situation. Call (254) 280-5320 and a real person picks up, day or night. We’ll get a tech out, diagnose the problem, and put the price in writing before any work starts. No surprises, no pressure, no overtime games.
