Goodman Heat Pump Service: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Goodman heat pump service in Dallas typically runs $150 – $650 installed, depending on the part and how deep the diagnosis goes. We stock common Goodman replacement parts on our trucks and can usually get your system cooling again the same day we show up. If your heat pump is running but not heating or cooling right, or making a noise it didn’t make last season, this page tells you what’s likely wrong, what it costs to fix, and whether you should touch it yourself.

Most Dallas homeowners discover a heat pump problem exactly the way you’d expect: the thermostat says 72, the air coming out of the vents says otherwise, and the July electric bill climbs while the house doesn’t get any cooler. Here’s what we see on Goodman units across Dallas, from Oak Cliff to Lake Highlands, and what it takes to get them back to work.

Which Goodman Models This Applies To

Goodman heat pumps run the range from builder-grade 13 SEER units to their higher-efficiency 18 SEER and variable-speed lines. The work we do spans the GSZ, GSX, GPH, and DSZC series, plus the Amana-branded units that roll off the same manufacturing lines. If you have a Goodman that’s 8 to 15 years old, the parts we replace most often are the contactor, the capacitor, the defrost control board, the reversing valve, and the outdoor fan motor.

How to identify your model: the data plate on the side of the outdoor unit lists the model number, serial number, and a parts reference we use to match components exactly. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Goodman changed capacitor specs across several model years, so a dual-run capacitor that fits a 2012 GSZ14 may not match a 2018 GSX16. Grabbing a generic part off a shelf without checking the microfared rating is a fast way to burn out a compressor. On OEM versus aftermarket: for contactors and capacitors, quality aftermarket parts from brands like Mars or Supco hold up fine. For control boards and reversing valves, we recommend genuine Goodman parts. The tolerances are tighter, and a board that’s slightly wrong can misbehave in ways that cost more in callbacks than the OEM part costs up front.

Worth saying plainly: Dalton Heating & Air Dallas is an independent service provider. We’re not a Goodman dealer or affiliated with Goodman corporate. That means we work on what’s actually in your house, not what we get a spiff for selling.

Signs Your Goodman Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. This is almost always a bad capacitor, the part that gives the fan motor and compressor their starting jolt. It’s the single most common heat pump failure we see in Dallas, because 100-degree days cook capacitors fast.
  • Unit short-cycles: turns on, runs a few minutes, shuts off. Often a failing contactor or a low refrigerant charge triggering the low-pressure safety switch. Short-cycling kills compressors over time and spikes your electric bill while it’s doing it.
  • Heat pump runs but blows lukewarm air. In cooling season this points to low refrigerant or a reversing valve stuck mid-position. In heating season it’s often a defrost control board that isn’t kicking the unit into defrost, so the outdoor coil ices over and blocks heat transfer.
  • Ice on the outdoor coil in summer, or frost that never clears in winter. A defrost board failure or a restricted metering device. Ice on the coil insulates it from the air, so the unit works harder and moves less heat.
  • Clicking, buzzing, or chattering from the outdoor unit. The contactor’s contacts pit and arc over time. When they get bad enough, the unit may not start at all, or the contactor welds shut and the unit runs nonstop until something burns out.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Goodman heat pump service in Dallas falls within a $150 – $650 installed range for the vast majority of component failures. Most common jobs land like this:

  • Capacitor replacement: $150 – $250 installed
  • Contactor replacement: $150 – $275 installed
  • Defrost control board: $250 – $450 installed
  • Outdoor fan motor: $350 – $550 installed
  • Reversing valve: $450 – $650 installed, given the refrigerant recovery and recharge involved

Every price we quote is written down before any work starts. You’ll see the part cost and the labor separated, and you approve the number before we open the parts box. Marco Benitez, our owner and lead technician, picked up his habit of quoting flat written prices years ago and never saw a reason to stop. The repair itself is covered by a written guarantee for a full year. If it fails in that time, we come back at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard we’ve held since 2003.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. What you can safely handle yourself: changing the air filter, checking that breakers haven’t tripped, hosing off a dirty outdoor coil with the power off, and clearing leaves and debris from around the unit. Those are maintenance moves, and they prevent a good number of service calls.

What you should not touch: anything involving the capacitor or the electrical compartment. Heat pump capacitors hold enough charge to hurt you even when the unit is off, and the wiring inside a condenser is live anytime the disconnect isn’t pulled and verified. The same goes for refrigerant. If the charge is low, there’s a leak somewhere, and finding and fixing that leak takes a recovery machine, a vacuum pump, and the right gauges. That’s not a weekend project. If your Goodman is running wrong, call us at (254) 280-5320. Tell us what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you what it costs before we start.
