A Lennox capacitor replacement in Dallas typically runs $150 – $320 installed, depending on whether your system uses a single run capacitor or a dual-run capacitor. We stock common Lennox-compatible capacitors on our trucks, so most replacements happen the same day we diagnose the failure. The way most Dallas homeowners find out their capacitor is dead: the outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the compressor clicks and shuts off after a few seconds. If you’ve walked outside on a 102-degree July afternoon and heard that low electric hum with nothing moving, you’re probably looking at a failed capacitor.

Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Capacitors are not brand-specific in the way control boards are. Lennox systems, like most residential AC units, use cylindrical run capacitors made by a handful of manufacturers: AmRad, Genteq, Packard, and Titan. What matters for your Lennox is the microfarad (µF) rating and voltage printed on the side of the old capacitor, not whether the replacement says “Lennox” on it. Common Lennox outdoor units across the Dallas area, including the XC, XP, Merit, and Elite series, use capacitors rated between 35/5 µF and 80/10 µF for dual-run applications. That number matters more than the brand on the label. A single-run capacitor affects one component only, usually the outdoor fan motor. A dual-run handles both the fan and the compressor at once. If you replace a dual-run with the wrong capacitance, one side runs hot and fails early.
Dalton Heating & Air Dallas is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Lennox. We install quality aftermarket capacitors that meet or exceed the OEM spec. For homeowners who specifically want the OEM-branded part, we can order it, but in our experience the AmRad USA-made capacitors outlast most factory-installed units in Texas heat.

Signs Your Lennox Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t turn. The compressor or fan motor is drawing current but not getting the starting jolt the capacitor normally delivers. This is the most common failure in Dallas, especially after a heat wave pushes run cycles longer.
- System short-cycles or trips the breaker. A weak capacitor forces the compressor to pull more amps, which trips breakers or shuts the unit down on thermal overload. We see this frequently in older Lennox systems after six or seven Dallas summers.
- Fan starts only when you spin it by hand. If you can push the outdoor fan blade with a stick and it kicks on, the start assist from the capacitor is gone. That’s a textbook capacitor failure, not a motor failure, most of the time.
- Visible bulging or leaking from the capacitor body. A capacitor is a sealed metal cylinder. When internal pressure builds from heat or age, the top swells outward or leaks a yellowish fluid. If it’s bulged, it’s done. No test needed.
- AC runs but airflow from the outdoor unit is weak or intermittent. The fan motor is starving for its rated voltage, so it runs at reduced speed. This one’s easy to miss until the compressor overheats.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, you should expect to pay $150 – $320 for a Lennox capacitor replacement installed. The part itself typically costs $25 – $70 depending on whether it’s a single or dual-run capacitor and the brand. The rest is the service call, diagnostic time, and labor. Systems with dual-run capacitors usually land on the higher end because the part is more expensive and there’s a second lead to test. Our pricing at Dalton Heating & Air Dallas follows one rule: written price before any work starts. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it doesn’t change depending on how hot it is outside or how busy our schedule gets. Every capacitor replacement includes a written guarantee for a full year. If it fails inside that window, we come back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Capacitors store enough electrical charge to knock you on your back even when the power is off. That’s not a scare line, it’s a fact. A capacitor holds voltage after the disconnect is pulled, and discharging one incorrectly can cause a serious shock or burn. For that reason, we don’t recommend treating a capacitor swap as a weekend DIY project. What you can safely do: check your thermostat settings, replace a dirty air filter, and confirm the breaker isn’t tripped. What you should not do: remove the electrical panel on your outdoor unit and start probing. If you can hear the hum and the fan won’t spin, shut the system off at the thermostat and call us at (254) 280-5320. We’ll diagnose it, quote it in writing, and usually have it running the same day.
FAQs
Plan on five to ten years in Dallas. Heat shortens a capacitor’s life, and a Dallas system runs hard from May through September. We routinely replace capacitors on units that are six or seven years old, especially after a summer with back-to-back 100-degree weeks.
No. A capacitor is a sealed component, and once it swells, leaks, or drops below its rated microfarads, the only fix is replacement. We never patch or jump a bad capacitor, and any technician who suggests that is not doing you a favor.
Most Lennox capacitor replacements take 30 to 60 minutes once we’re on site. That includes testing the old capacitor, confirming the correct replacement spec, installing the new one, and running the system to verify startup amperage is within spec.
Yes. Our trucks carry common single and dual-run capacitors rated from 5 µF up to 80 µF across the standard voltage ratings, plus the brands we service most often in Dallas: Lennox, Carrier, and Trane. If your system needs an oddball spec, we can usually have it by the next morning.
If your Lennox is humming and not running, shut it down and call us at (254) 280-5320. Marco Benitez and the crew at Dalton Heating & Air Dallas will give you a straight answer and a written price before we touch a wire. Tell me what’s wrong, I’ll tell you what it costs, in writing, before we start.
